Airbus is a global aerospace firm based in Europe. Airbus designs, produces and sells civil and military aerospace goods across the world, as well as aeroplanes. History
In 1970, French and German aerospace companies (later joined by Spanish and British enterprises) created Airbus as a partnership to fill a market need for short- to medium-range, high-capacity jetliners and compete with long-established American manufacturers. The A300, its first product, entered service in 1974.
It is co-owned by the German-French-Spanish European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS), which owns 80%, and BAE Systems, which owns 20%.
The executive committees of the parent and subsidiary firms were unified in January 2017 due to the dominance of the Airbus SAS division within Airbus Group SE, although the companies remained independent legal entities. In April 2017, the holding company was given its current name.
